Cerebrolysin
Mixture of low molecular weight peptides and amino acids derived from purified porcine brain. Approved in more than 40 countries for stroke, dementia, and traumatic brain injury. Not approved in the US. One of the most clinically studied neurotrophics, with over 200 clinical studies.

Mechanism of Action
Cerebrolysin contains peptide fragments that mimic the action of natural neurotrophic factors (BDNF, GDNF, NGF, CNTF). It promotes neuroplasticity, neuroprotection, neurogenesis, and synaptogenesis. It acts on multiple pathways simultaneously, unlike single molecules that target only one.

Benefits
Stroke recovery
ProvenMeta-analyses of clinical trials demonstrate improved functional recovery post-stroke when administered within the first 72 hours. Approved for this indication in 40+ countries.
View studyDementia and Alzheimer's
Under researchClinical studies show modest improvement in cognitive function in patients with mild to moderate Alzheimer's. Mixed results in meta-analyses.
Traumatic brain injury
Under researchClinical studies in TBI show neuroprotective potential, but evidence is still insufficient for a definitive recommendation.
Risks and Side Effects
Allergic reaction
Moderate(Rare)Being derived from porcine brain, it may cause allergic reactions in sensitive individuals.
Dizziness and agitation
Low(Uncommon)Mild neurological side effects reported in clinical studies.

Super brain drug
Partially trueWhat they claim
Cerebrolysin regenerates neurons and cures brain damage.
Actual evidence
It has over 200 clinical studies and approval in 40+ countries — far more evidence than most peptides. Real efficacy in stroke recovery. But it does not 'regenerate' lost neurons and results in Alzheimer's are modest. Not FDA-approved due to issues with standardization of the biological product.

PubMedFrequently Asked Questions
Why isn't Cerebrolysin approved in the US?
The FDA requires rigorous standardization of composition for approval. Since Cerebrolysin is a complex mixture of peptides derived from porcine brain, each batch may have slightly different composition, making it difficult to meet FDA criteria. It is approved in over 40 countries including Germany, Russia, China, and South Korea.
