Espermidina
IMPORTANT: Spermidine is not a peptide; it is a natural polyamine found in all living cells. Present in high concentrations in wheat germ, aged cheese (especially mature cheddar), mushrooms, soy, and natto. It activates autophagy (cellular recycling) and has been shown to increase lifespan in animal models. In humans, it is associated with reduced cardiovascular mortality.

Mechanism of Action
Spermidine is a potent inducer of autophagy — the cellular process of recycling damaged components. It inhibits histone acetyltransferases, modulating gene expression. It reduces inflammation, improves mitochondrial and cardiac function, and mimics the effects of caloric restriction across various systems.

Longevidade / autofagia
Oral (suplemento ou dieta)Gérmen de trigo, soja fermentada, queijos maturados
Indutor natural de autofagia. Consumo alto via dieta associado a redução de 5 anos na idade cardiovascular em estudo epidemiológico.
Benefits
Autophagy induction
ProvenDemonstrated in multiple in vitro and in vivo studies. Considered one of the most potent natural inducers of autophagy.
Cardiovascular health
Under researchPopulation studies associate high dietary spermidine intake with lower cardiovascular and all-cause mortality.
View studyCognitive function
Under researchThe SmartAge study showed modest memory improvement in older adults with subjective cognitive decline after 3 months of supplementation.
Animal longevity
Under researchLifespan extension demonstrated in yeast, worms, flies, mice, and human cardiomyocytes in vitro.
Risks and Side Effects
Limited clinical studies
Low(N/A)Has been present in the diet forever, so the safety profile is favorable. But clinical studies with supplemental doses are still limited.
Internet vs. Science
What people say online compared to the actual scientific evidence.
Eating cheddar cheese makes you live longer
Partially trueWhat they claim
Aged cheese contains spermidine and therefore prolongs life.
Actual evidence
True that mature cheddar contains spermidine. Population studies associate higher dietary intake with longevity. But attributing longevity to a single cheese component is an oversimplification — the overall diet matters.
