Mechanism of Action

Melanotan II activates multiple melanocortin receptors (MC1R-MC5R). Via MC1R, it stimulates melanocytes to produce melanin, causing tanning without UV exposure. Via MC4R, it affects sexual desire centers in the hypothalamus (same receptor as PT-141/Vyleesi). Via MC3R/MC4R, it may suppress appetite.

Benefits

Tanning without UV

Proven

Phase 2 clinical studies confirm significant increase in melanin and skin tanning without sun exposure.

Effect on sexual function

Under research

Observed side effect that led to the development of PT-141 (bremelanotide/Vyleesi) as a separate medication.

Risks and Side Effects

Atypical nevi / melanoma

High(Case reports)

Reports of atypical nevi (irregular moles) appearing and potential malignant transformation. Melanocyte stimulation may promote melanoma in predisposed individuals.

Severe nausea

Moderate(Very common)

Intense nausea is the most frequent side effect, especially with the first doses.

Increased blood pressure

Moderate(Common)

Transient hypertension reported in clinical studies.

Product contamination

High(Variable)

Products sold online are frequently contaminated or have incorrect dosing. No quality control.

Internet vs. Science

What people say online compared to the actual scientific evidence.

Safe tanning without sun

False

What they claim

MT-2 gives a perfect tan without the risk of sunburn. Safer than sunbathing.

Actual evidence

Causes real tanning, but is NOT safe. Associated with atypical nevi and theoretical melanoma risk. Banned in Europe and Australia. Black market products are frequently contaminated. Not approved in any country.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Melanotan II legal?

No. Melanotan II is banned for consumer sale in most countries. The TGA (Australia) and MHRA (UK) have issued warnings against its use. ANVISA does not approve it. Products sold online operate illegally.

What is the difference between Melanotan II and PT-141?

PT-141 (bremelanotide/Vyleesi) was developed from Melanotan II, but modified to act predominantly on the MC4R receptor (sexual function) with less effect on MC1R (melanin). PT-141 is FDA-approved; Melanotan II is not approved in any country.
