Resveratrol

IMPORTANT: Resveratrol is not a peptide; it is a natural polyphenol found in red grapes, red wine, peanuts, and some fruits. It gained fame in the 2000s when mouse studies suggested it activated sirtuins (proteins associated with longevity). It is one of the most studied compounds in aging research.

Mechanism of Action

Resveratrol activates SIRT1, one of the sirtuins associated with longevity. It mimics some effects of caloric restriction. It has antioxidant, anti-inflammatory properties and improves mitochondrial function. It crosses the blood-brain barrier and reaches multiple tissues.

Ativador de SIRT1. Mimetiza restrição calórica em obesos. Biodisponibilidade oral é baixa (~1–5%).

Benefits

Cardiovascular health

Under research

Clinical studies show modest improvement in endothelial function, blood pressure, and inflammatory markers.

View study

Insulin sensitivity

Under research

Meta-analyses suggest modest improvement in glycemic control in patients with type 2 diabetes.

Anti-inflammatory

Under research

Reduces systemic inflammatory markers in several clinical studies.

Human longevity

Unproven

Mouse studies suggested increased longevity, but the effect was not replicated in other animal studies. No evidence of increased longevity in humans.

Risks and Side Effects

Very low bioavailability

Low(Universal)

Resveratrol is rapidly metabolized and has very low oral bioavailability, raising questions about its efficacy at commercial doses.

Drug interactions

Moderate(Variable)

May interact with anticoagulants and drugs metabolized by cytochrome P450.

Internet vs. Science

What people say online compared to the actual scientific evidence.

Drinking red wine gives you resveratrol benefits

False

What they claim

Red wine is healthy because of resveratrol.

Actual evidence

The amount of resveratrol in red wine is so small that you would need to drink hundreds of bottles per day to reach studied doses. The possible cardiovascular benefits of red wine come from other compounds (and alcohol carries risks).

Sirtuin activator that reverses aging

Partially true

What they claim

Resveratrol activates sirtuins and reverses aging (popularized by David Sinclair).

Actual evidence

It activates SIRT1 in vitro. In humans, benefits are modest and the effect on longevity has never been demonstrated. Mouse studies were inconsistent.

Narrative Review

Revisão abrangente mostrando que enquanto resveratrol mostra benefícios consistentes em estudos animais, a tradução para humanos é limitada por baixa biodisponibilidade.
